New, Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry ($3.50)
A sweet and tasty little orange fruit inside a golden, Chinese lantern-like husk. Fruits fall from the plants when ripe for an easy harvest from the ground. The perfect garden snack. Start indoors in mid-March to transplant out in May.
Cossack Pineapple Ground Cherry ($3.50)
Physalis pubescens. A cousin of Tomatillos from Eastern Europe. Delicious lemon yellow berries are encased in a papery husk. Eaten out of hand make a wonderful garden snack. Great to give a pinneapple flavor to preserves, desserts and other dishes.
Tomatillos ($3.50)
A close relative of tomatoes, but hardier. They produce well in marginal soils and are not affected by tomato blight. Harvest when the husks turn brown and begin to open and reveal the tomatillos. The 3-4 foot high plants produce copious amounts of 2-3 oz. fruit and should be placed 2-3 feet apart and allowed to sprawl. The tomatillos get sweeter as they mature and continue to do so even after they fall off the plants.
