Camassia quamash. Perennial herb native to western North America that blooms in May and June. Pale blue to deep blue flowers on stems a foot to 3 feet high. The basal leaves have a grass-like appearance.
Blue Camas was a very important food source for First Nations tribes in the Pacific Northwest. Plots of them were farmed and passed on by women. They were pit-roasted, boiled or dried for use as winter food.
This bulbflower grows best in well-drained rich soil. Very ornamental: large numbers can create a beautiful blue-violet effect. Can tolerate dry summers. Best direct sown in fall or early winter. 125 seeds.
