A delicious and open-pollinated alternative to the famous Sungold cherry tomato, the California Sungold will win your heart just the same.
This variety comes to us from our friends at Adaptive Seeds in Oregon. They have been working alongside keen tomato breeders, Steve Peters and Kanti Rawal, to create a variety as close to Sungold as can be. They certainly succeeded in their mission, and they’ve brought a beautifully sweet, deep orange cherry tomato to the world for us to enjoy.
The California Sungold holds an excellent flavour and flaunts a thinner skin than other cherry varieties. That being said, it remains unlikely to split, unless exposed to extreme fluctuations in watering.
The plants are indeterminate and grow vigorously, bearing robust clusters of vibrant orange fruits in abundance throughout the season. They require trellising and, in our experience, they even thrived outside of a greenhouse, showing excellent hardiness.
This flavoursome cherry has been a joy for us to grow and has become one of our favourite varieties!
Start tomatoes indoors in a warm area as early as February. Pot up as needed throughout their growth, not allowing them to become root-bound. Transplant outside only after the last frost has passed.
