Common Mullein (Verbascum thaspus)
Naturalized, biennial herb with a rosette of fuzzy greyish leaves the first year. Striking flower-stalk from a woolly leaf base in the second year, growing to 6 feet and covered with densely crowded, sulphur-yellow, 1 inch flowers. Harvest the entire plant in bloom (July /Aug) dry for later herb use. Leaves are brewed or steamed for coughs, hoarseness and bronchitis. Flower infused oil used for ear infections. Prefers well drained soil, sun, tolerates drought. Good dye plant.
