Traditional variety from La Palma, one of the islands of the Canary Islands in Spain. This variety goes back a long time, often having been passed down through generations. Although it originated in La Palma, its cultivation has now spread throughout the other Canary Islands due to its excellent qualities. It is called "Black Palmera" because of its origin and the dark colour of its leaves, which typically display dark reddish-green leaves. Its leaves are large and quite wrinkled, giving it an attractive and distinctive appearance - those from La Palma, recognize this lettuce on the spot, regardless of whether it is in the fields or on their plates!
Although its characteristics place it among the head lettuces, this variety does not form a true head. This variety does not show great tolerance to heat, so it is better grown in the cooler months. Amongst organic growers, this variety holds a reputation as one of the most productive heirloom varieties out there.
This variety consistently receives very high ratings in tastings, often winning over other commercial cultivars. Its fantastic flavour and delicate texture make it a winner for salads!
