It is also said to be effective in treating hepatitis and various skin diseases, including dermatitis, psoriasis and shingles. It is commonly taken for menstrual pain and as a sedative. It has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The roots are a source of the chemical compounds known as Tanshinones, several of which are proving effective against cancer cells of various tumour types.
