Coreopsis tinctoria.  A native to North America, this slender-stemmed, ferny-leafed, multi-headed yellow/mahogany flower grows easily. It prefers full sun to produce prolific flowers. The more you pick the flower heads the more they produce. The seeds can be started indoors a few weeks before the last frost and transplanted when 2 inches high or direct sowed after danger of frost. Plant 6 inches apart so they can help support each other. Bees are very attracted to the flowers. This plant self-seeds readily. When used as a dye, it colours the wool or silk yellow to orange. If used on cotton the colour is very pale. (See Dyeing with Coreopsis under Articles for full details.)
