One of the earliest domesticated plants, Teff is mainly cultivated in Ethiopia, where it is used to make a flat bread called Injera. It is an annual bunch grass that produces very tiny seeds – in fact, the seeds are so small that Teff is considered the smallest grain in the world! Despite its size, Teff is very nutritious, especially high in iron, calcium and magnesium. Importantly, Teff is gluten-free.
Very tolerant of drought and poor soil, Teff is quite ornamental with many wispy tillers on each plant. It can be direct-sown or transplanted.
We obtained this White Teff from Adaptive Seeds and really enjoyed watching it grow in 2025. This specific cultivar is well-adapted to the Pacific Northwest, maturing much quicker than other teffs. Quite a special plant to grow in Canada!
