Scarlet Runner Beans (Phaseolus coccineus)
Climbs vigourously on poles, fences, string or trellis up to 6-8 feet. Is grown for its brilliant red flowers as well as for its abundant and flavourful beans. The flowers have a delicious light beany taste and make fine salad additions. The beans are great shelling beans when they have plumped up the pods before drying down. The large dry beans have outstanding flavour. Runner beans have a more open flower than regular beans, enabling cross-fertilization by bees.
